Frequently Asked Questions
Q: “Many of the settings and struggles in Archangel seem so real, so plausible even if exotic. Is that the writer’s craft and artistic license, or things you actually experienced?”
A: If you have the time to review the About - CV section of this website, you’ll have your answer. Much of what I’ve written about is based on blood, sweat, and tears of those I served, and others who served them with me. Beyond changing names of the innocent, the fictionalization comes more in blending the UN defined complex humanitarian emergencies, in which Archangel is set, into a tighter time frame than when they occured. But much of what you read springs from what I smelled, tasted, touched and trembled to recall.
Q: “Is ‘Mark Mosely’ a pen name, or is it the author’s real name?”
A: It is my real name, from a family of writers. Most of the characters and the experiences in Archangel are drawn from a life well-lived. While I have the greatest respect for authors whose talents include creating a compelling fictional world which invites the reader into its magic. Archangel instead springs from faces, facts, smiles and service over 25 years; on 5 continents; through 7 wars; within 13 UN emergencies; from +60 countries.
Q: “As Archangel’s author, how did you choose which ‘voice’ to write in?”
A: Since Archangel is fiction even if drawn from a deep base of personal reality, writing in first person (‘I this’, ‘I that’) would be easier, but means readers are limited to what I know and only when I know it. Third person omniscient (an all-knowing narrator’s ‘They / this’) allows the reader to often guess or know more of the ‘who, what, where, when’ and ‘why’ before Archangel’s characters – even Skye. Early Archangel reviewers remarked that the places, people, and events framing the Archangel story are often as important as the characters. As much of Archangel is laced with ‘best practices’ I learned in some of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies, that is music to my ears.
